Walking Pads: The Easy Way to Keep Moving This Winter

Dark evenings, sideways rain and back-to-back video calls are a recipe for a very sedentary season. We look at how a compact walking pad can quietly put the steps back into your day, and which WalkingPad model suits which kind of life.

There is a particular kind of tired that comes from sitting still all day. You finish work, glance at your step count and find it barely into four figures, and by then it is dark, wet and the sofa is calling. For anyone working from home, running a business from the kitchen table or juggling a household around a laptop, it is one of the least glamorous realities of modern life.

The walking pad has become one of the more practical answers to it. Slim, low and foldable, it slides under a standing desk while you work, then tucks under the sofa or bed when you are done. No gym membership, no school-run detours, no waiting for the rain to stop.

What exactly is a walking pad?

Think of a walking pad as a treadmill with everything you don’t need taken away. There is no towering console and, on most models, no fixed handrail, just a motorised belt you control with a small remote, an app or, on some models, by where you stand on the deck. They are designed first and foremost for walking at a steady, comfortable pace rather than running, which is exactly why they work so well under a desk.

WalkingPad, made by KingSmith, describes itself as the original creator of the category, and its folding designs have picked up Red Dot and iF design awards. The UK store currently shows an average of 4.6 stars from more than 1,250 customer reviews on its own site, with independent reviews also available on Trustpilot.

Why it works for busy women

The appeal is less about fitness goals and more about friction. A walking pad removes almost every excuse that gets between you and a walk:

  • The weather. A UK winter is not kind to good intentions. Walking indoors means the forecast stops mattering.
  • The time. Instead of finding a spare hour, you add movement to things you were already doing: reading emails, listening in on calls, catching up on a podcast or the evening’s TV.
  • The space. Most models fold in half and roll away on built-in wheels, so a spare room, home office or living room doesn’t have to become a home gym.

It is worth being realistic too. Walking while typing takes a little practice, detailed work such as spreadsheets or design is usually easier with the belt paused, and slow desk walking is gentle activity rather than a workout. It is best seen as a way to sit less, alongside, not instead of, other exercise.

Which WalkingPad is right for you?

The UK range is broad, from simple walking-only pads to folding running treadmills. These are the models that suit the most common needs.

For everyday desk walking: WalkingPad C2

The C2 is the brand’s best-selling foldable walking pad and the most straightforward place to start. It walks at up to 6 km/h (around 3.7 mph), has a 1200 × 400 mm walking area and folds in half to slide under furniture. Speed can be set by remote, through the free KS Fit app, or automatically via FootSense™, which adjusts the pace depending on where you stand on the belt. It is walking-only, with a 100 kg maximum user weight.

Price: £369 (was £499)

For a sturdier feel: WalkingPad A1 Pro

If you want a little more reassurance underfoot, the A1 Pro offers a higher maximum user weight of 136 kg while still folding down to a slim 822 × 547 × 129 mm. It also has FootSense™ speed control and tops out at 6 km/h, so it is firmly a walking machine, but a solid one for longer daily sessions.

Price: £429 (was £599)

For walking by day, jogging by evening: WalkingPad R2 and R3 Hybrid+

The Hybrid Series is designed for people who want one machine to do two jobs. With the handrail lowered, these work as a desk-friendly walking pad; raise the handrail and they switch into a faster mode for jogging and running at up to 12 km/h (around 7.5 mph).

The R2 folds to 1000 × 720 × 162 mm and weighs 36 kg. The R3 Hybrid+ is the best seller of the series, with an adjustable handrail and side handles, though at 40.9 kg it takes more effort to move around, so check your storage route before you buy.

For serious workouts: WalkingPad G5i

The newest flagship is a different proposition altogether. The G5i is a folding incline treadmill, with automatic incline up to 18% across 25 levels, speeds up to 16 km/h and a 1300 × 500 mm running area. It is the choice if you want your indoor walking to feel like a hill climb rather than a stroll, though at 68 kg and 1160 × 848 × 258 mm folded, it needs a dedicated spot. The launch offer currently includes free White Glove delivery and 12 months of the Kinomap app, which lets you walk or run along real-world video routes.

On a tighter budget: WalkingPad P1

If you simply want to test whether a walking pad fits your routine, the P1 is the entry point to the range, with a top speed of around 3.7 mph.

Before you buy: five things to check

  1. Your desk height. Standing on the deck raises you up, so your desk needs enough height adjustment to keep your keyboard and screen comfortable. Most fixed desks are too low.
  2. The space between desk legs. Measure the gap and look for crossbars underneath.
  3. Where it will live. Check the folded dimensions against the space under your bed or sofa, and the route to get it there.
  4. Walking or running. Walking-only models aren’t designed for jogging. If you want to pick up the pace, look at the Hybrid Series or the G5i.
  5. Your flooring. On carpet, a firm treadmill mat helps with stability and noise. WalkingPad sells one for £55.

The verdict

A walking pad won’t transform your health overnight, and it isn’t meant to. What it does well is make movement the easy option on the days when it would otherwise be the first thing to go. For most people working from home, the C2 or A1 Pro will cover everything they need. If you want to run as well as walk, the R2 or R3 Hybrid+ earns its extra weight, and the G5i is there for anyone ready to turn the spare room into a proper training space.
