As Wayfair.co.uk launches its first-ever film partnership with a curated ‘Practical Magic 2’ collection, stylist and author Selina Lake shares how to bring candlelit, eclectic charm into your home this season.
The ‘ber’ months have arrived. According to the astronomical calendar, autumn officially begins in the UK on 23rd September, and after a long, hot summer, there’s something quietly welcome about the nights drawing in. It’s the moment many of us start looking around our homes with fresh eyes, ready to swap summer’s lightness for something warmer and more enveloping.
Just as we reach for extra layers in our wardrobes, our homes crave the same treatment: tactile textures, soft throws and the rich, earthy colours of the season. This year, though, there’s a little extra magic in the air.
A spellbinding partnership
The release of ‘Practical Magic 2’ invites us to embrace the darker, more mysterious side of autumn interiors: candlelit corners, deep hues, vintage-inspired pieces and rooms brimming with personality. Set 25 years after the events of the beloved 1998 original, the film is in cinemas now, and it has inspired Wayfair’s first-ever film partnership. The home furnishings retailer has launched a curated ‘Practical Magic 2’ inspired-by collection, and has teamed up with stylist and author Selina Lake (@selinalake) to show how to create a space that feels warm, welcoming and effortlessly eclectic.
Wayfair’s Resident Style Advisor and Art Director, Olivia Sauerwein, believes the timing couldn’t be better. “There’s certainly something enchanting about the cosy months of autumn, and we’re seeing that reflected in the way people are styling their homes,” she says. “This season is all about embracing depth and character – think rich, earthy hues, layered textures, vintage-inspired furniture and ambient lighting that creates a sense of warmth. We’re moving away from interiors that feel too uniform or minimal, and towards spaces that are eclectic, expressive and designed to tell a story.”
So how do you capture that storytelling spirit at home? Selina shares her top tips, room by room.
The living room: moody, romantic and ready for a little spell
For Selina, the living room is the place to lean fully into atmosphere. “Give your living space a touch of witchy nostalgia with a deep green velvet armchair, flickering candles and a fringed table lamp, bringing warmth, softness and texture to the room,” she suggests. “A deep dark floral wallpaper adds a dramatic feel.”
Drama doesn’t mean darkness everywhere, though. Selina recommends balancing the moodier elements with lighter touches that nod to the film’s most famous setting. “Introduce echoes of white as a nod to the renowned white wood-clad Victorian house from the Practical Magic film, softened with autumnal flowers that look as though they’ve just been gathered from the garden,” she says. From there, it’s all about layering: “a floral tassel cushion, stacks of old books and a charming bobbin side table to complete the look – a little enchanted, a little nostalgic, and wonderfully lived-in.”
The dining table: a little ‘Practical Magic’ at the table
If there’s one place to have fun this autumn, it’s around the table. Selina’s approach is to mix florals with the unexpected. “Style a spellbinding, enchanted dining space by mixing florals with unexpected details: a frilly-edged tablecloth, floral tableware scattered with snakes, butterflies and tiny bugs, burgundy linen napkins and decorative gold cutlery,” she explains.
Fans of the original film will appreciate her nod to the Owens sisters’ famous midnight margaritas. “Layer in embossed green glasses filled with lime and coconut margaritas (a cocktail or mocktail!), then scatter twinkling tea lights and pumpkins along the table.”
The finishing touches are where the real enchantment happens. Selina suggests adding “a blue floral teapot, a mini cauldron filled with sugar and a three-tier cake stand piled with dark chocolate cakes topped with cherries.” Her secret? “The secret is in the mix – vintage-inspired pieces, clashing patterns and little unexpected details make the table feel layered, eclectic and just a little bit magical.”
Outdoors: extending the season with a touch of autumnal magic
Cooler evenings needn’t mean retreating indoors just yet. Selina encourages us to “embrace the season with a cosy autumn space inspired by nature, layering a simple metal bench with cushions and throws in earthy shades and a mix of velvet, wool and woven floral textures.”
Height and light make all the difference here. “Add little stools with pots and planters at different heights, then finish with a flickering lantern for a touch of candlelit magic,” she says. Set against a crisp white brick wall, “let the rich autumn tones, layered textures and gathered greenery create that cosy, slightly enchanted Practical Magic-inspired feel.”
