Spotlight on: Wild Human Skincare: Ethically Made and Environmentally Friendly

Jon & Lizz Shaw

In Autumn 2021, Lizz Shaw and her husband Jon founded Wild Human Skincare Ltd, driven by their shared love for natural skincare. Their products are meticulously handcrafted in small batches in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Lizz is responsible for product creation, research, label design, and social media, while Jon takes care of website management, label printing, and other tasks as needed. Lizz is a home-educating mother of two of their three children, while Jon works full-time as an IT officer for the local government.

Wild Human Skincare is committed to providing only the finest natural skincare products, using only natural oils, butters, and scents sourced from pure organic essential oils, and free from artificial colors and fragrances. Their range of products is truly wild and authentic, with no harmful ingredients whatsoever.

Whenever possible, Wild Human Skincare uses organic ingredients from ethically sourced suppliers. They use only certified fair trade and organic cocoa butter, and their shea butter comes from a women’s cooperative in Ghana that supports the local community. The only exception is tocopherol (vitamin E), which is not grown organically in the UK, so they use it sparingly.

All of their products are vegan and contain no animal products or by-products such as honey or beeswax. Wild Human Skincare believes that plants provide the best natural ingredients for effective skincare.

The last nine years

Over the past nine years, Lizz has expanded her range to include body butters, foot balms, face creams, all made with natural and organic ingredients. She enjoys the entire process, from researching ingredients to creating new recipes and mixing and whipping ingredients.

Lizz’s commitment to natural products extends beyond skincare. She has also made her own cleaning products and moved towards using vitamins, food, and homeopathy to treat illnesses at home.

Q & A with Lizz and Jon Shaw

How did Wild Human Skincare start?

When our son Asa was born in 2012, he swallowed meconium which led to a serious sepsis infection. He was in hospital for over 4 weeks. He also has Down’s syndrome and he struggled to feed for the first few weeks of his life.

Visiting him daily in the special care unit, I had to wash my hands constantly and use alcohol hand sanitiser. That, combined with the stress of a very unwell newborn baby, caused a bad eczema outbreak, and I lost all the skin on my hands. They were literally red raw and so painful. Even holding my baby hurt.

My GP prescribed an antibiotic steroid cream and a thick moisturising cream. They did help a little but left my hands very greasy for ages and I was aware of all the harsh chemicals in them, including alcohol. The list of possible side effects and the thinning of the skin from steroids was daunting. I hated the smell of those creams, the feel, and the ingredients. I later began to react negatively to one of the creams, causing my skin issues to worsen.

After some research, I discovered unrefined organic shea butter and used that instead with much more favourable results. This was the start of me making my own natural, plant powered hand balm. I started making more natural products and over the last few years I have formulated body butters, foot balms, face creams, deodorant, scalp oils and even sun cream. I really enjoy the whole process, from researching ingredients, to creating new recipes and the mindfulness involved in the weighing and mixing and whipping of ingredients.

It only seemed natural to take this further and to share these wonderful skincare products with the world. So, in 2021, my husband and I set up our small independent skincare business to share our passion with our corner of the world.

Tell us a little bit about your brand/business

We take 100% natural organic plant oils and butters, clays and salts, carefully chosen for their benefits to skin, and expertly blend them together to create something truly beautiful for your skin. From luxurious face creams and cleansing oils, to exfoliating face masks to bath salts, we have something for everyone.

At Wild Human Skincare we are passionate about care; caring for people and caring for the planet. It is important to us that our products are natural, organic, vegan, and ethically sourced as far as possible.

People don’t pay enough attention to what they are putting on their skin, yet the skin is the body’s largest organ! It’s estimated that around 60% of what goes on our skin can be absorbed, so it’s important that we care for it in the best way possible… with all the love and honour we Wild Humans deserve!

What products do you use to create your products?

We use Naissance organic Fairtrade cocoa butter, and organic unrefined shea butter, as well as many organic oils, including the virgin avocado oil, sweet almond, jojoba, unrefined argan, rosehip, pomegranate, natural vitamin E, etc.

In fact, most of the organic oils we use in our products are from Naissance.
