Pale and hand-scraped, golden and caramel-soft, smoky and steeped in heritage: Woodpecker Flooring's seven new herringbone floors prove the timeless zigzag still has plenty of new things to say.
Few flooring patterns have the staying power of herringbone. It turns up in Parisian apartments and Georgian townhouses, in pared-back new builds and cosy cottage kitchens, and it never seems to look out of place. Now British flooring specialist Woodpecker Flooring is giving the classic a fresh new look, with seven new herringbone designs that span the full spectrum of oak, from soft natural tones to rich, rustic finishes full of character.
The new additions sit across all three of the brand's signature collections, Harlech, Dartmouth and Berkeley, and offer a choice of colours, textures and finishes designed to suit everything from relaxed contemporary spaces to more traditional homes. Prices start at £85 per m², and every design comes with a 100-year warranty.
Why herringbone never dates
Part of herringbone's enduring appeal is its ability to shape-shift. The same pattern can feel crisp and modern in a pale oak, or warm and lived-in when the wood is darker and more textured. As Darwyn Ker, Managing Director of Woodpecker Flooring, puts it, "Herringbone flooring has a timeless appeal, but what makes it so exciting is how versatile it can be. The distinctive pattern brings movement and interest to a room, while the choice of colour, grain and finish can completely change the overall look and feel."
That versatility was the starting point for the new designs. "We wanted to give homeowners even more choice when it comes to finding a herringbone floor that reflects their personal style," he explains. "They celebrate everything that makes natural wood flooring so special, combining beautiful colours, distinctive textures and timeless design."
Berkeley: a floor with a story
The statement piece of the launch is Berkeley Cottage Oak, a beautifully rustic floor brimming with timeworn character. Its rich, inviting tones are deepened through a traditional smoking technique, while chatter marks from the sawmill run along the edges of each board, so the floor feels as though it has been part of the house for generations.
It's the one to choose if you want a floor that does the talking. Picture it in a period living room or a farmhouse kitchen, grounding the space with real depth and a sense of heritage. Berkeley Cottage Oak is £165 per m².

Dartmouth: oak at its most expressive
The Dartmouth collection celebrates the more expressive side of oak, and its two new herringbones show just how different that can look.
Dartmouth Beaten Oak is raw, authentic and beautifully understated. A hand-scraped finish brings out the quieter side of the wood, with a pale tone that evokes freshly hewn timber. It's a natural partner for linen, limewash and stoneware, and for anyone who loves Scandi calm with a little more soul. It's £109 per m².

At the other end of the scale, Dartmouth Gingersnap Oak has a rich patina, bronze tonal twists and hand-scraped detail that give it a wonderful sense of history and individuality. Think of it as the vintage find of the collection, warm, distressed and full of movement. It's £129 per m².

Harlech: four shades of warmth
The Harlech collection welcomes four new designs, each its own interpretation of oak's timeless appeal, and all priced at £85 to £90 per m², which makes them the most accessible way into the new launch.
Harlech Brook Oak brings warmth and depth through its rich sherry tones and gentle shading, a sophisticated yet inviting finish that sits comfortably outside of trends (£90 per m²). For something lighter and more relaxed, Harlech Natural Oak has soft golden tones flowing through the grain, a warm and easy foundation for almost any room (£85 per m²).

Harlech Amaretti Oak strikes a balance between warmth and simplicity, pairing golden caramel hues with subtle rustic character for a look of understated tranquillity (£90 per m²). Completing the quartet, Harlech Strait Oak is the cool one of the family. Its delicate silver-grey tones let the natural grain take centre stage, and it looks especially fresh in contemporary spaces with white walls and black accents (£90 per m²).

Get the look: choosing your herringbone
- Small or north-facing room? Pale, light-reflecting oaks such as Harlech Natural Oak or Dartmouth Beaten Oak help a space feel brighter and more open.
- Period home or cosy snug? Deeper, characterful finishes like Berkeley Cottage Oak or Harlech Brook Oak suit original features and moody, enveloping colour schemes.
- Cool, contemporary palette? Harlech Strait Oak's silver-grey tones sit happily alongside crisp whites, greys and black metal finishes.
- Order samples first. Wood tones shift with the light, so look at samples in your own room in the morning, afternoon and evening before you commit.
- Talk to your fitter early. Herringbone involves more cutting than straight planks, so ask how much extra flooring to allow for your room.
