Before you notice the cushions, the candlelight or the fresh flowers, you notice how a room smells. Scent is the quiet finishing touch that tells you exactly how to feel the moment you walk through the door.
There’s a reason a whiff of cinnamon can carry you straight back to childhood Christmases. Smell is the only sense wired directly into the brain’s emotional centre, the limbic system, where memory and mood live. Which is why the right scent can sharpen a sluggish morning, soften a stressful evening, or make a rented flat feel unmistakably like home.
Nikura, the UK aromatherapy brand behind hundreds of essential oils, blends and fragrance oils, has made mood-setting refreshingly simple: expert-mixed blends named for the feeling you’re after, and sculptural waterless diffusers that look as good on a shelf as they smell.
Here’s our edit, organised by mood, from first coffee to lights out.
Wake up

The coffee alternative
Energy Essential Oil Blend
Herbs, citrus and mint, with basil at its heart. Nikura suggests diffusing a few drops when you’re tempted by a third cup of coffee. Crisp and green, it’s a natural fit for the kitchen first thing.

Clary Sage Essential Oil
Herbal, slightly nutty and quietly floral, clary sage is the grown-up alternative to lavender. Use it for a long evening soak with the lamps low, mixed into a carrier oil before it goes in the bath. Avoid it during pregnancy.

Shop now, £7.99How to style with scent
- Zone your home. Use citrus in the kitchen, cedarwood in the hallway, peppermint where you work, eucalyptus in the bathroom, and lavender or clary sage in the bedroom.
- Mix your own. Start with two single notes, such as orange and cedarwood or lavender and frankincense, in roughly equal drops, then adjust to taste.
- Match scent to season. Swap fresh blends for spice and woods as the nights draw in, just as you’d swap linen throws for wool.
- Less is more. A room should smell subtly of something lovely, not overpoweringly of it. Use a timer setting and let the scent fade in and out.
- Treat the diffuser as décor. Group it with objects of different heights, like a candle, a small vase and a book, rather than leaving it alone on a windowsill.
- Create a welcome. Switch on a diffuser near the front door half an hour before guests arrive. It’s the first impression they’ll notice.
