There’s a particular moment every October when your hands start to feel tight after washing them, your lips crack on the school run, and the moisturiser that carried you through summer suddenly isn’t enough. Cold air outside and dry, heated air inside is a tough combination for skin, and it’s the reason so many of us overhaul our routines as the clocks go back.
But a seasonal refresh doesn’t have to mean a seasonal splurge across the board. Some luxury products earn their price through texture, scent and the sheer pleasure of using them. Others have high-street counterparts that do the core job just as well. Below, we’ve matched six self-care categories with one “treat yourself” pick and one “smart save”, so you can mix and match according to your budget and what matters most to you.
Face: rich moisture for central-heating skin
Splurge — Clinique Moisture Surge Intense 72H Lipid-Replenishing Hydrator (125ml), around £59.25
The “Intense” version of Clinique’s cult gel-cream is the one to reach for in winter. It’s a richer, cushiony texture designed to top up the skin’s lipids as well as its water content, which is exactly what dry, tight, heating-stressed skin is missing. It layers well under make-up and feels comforting rather than heavy.

Save — CeraVe Moisturising Cream (454g), RRP £15.50
A dermatologist favourite for good reason. CeraVe’s tub combines three essential ceramides with hyaluronic acid to support a stressed skin barrier, it’s fragrance-free, and it’s suitable for eczema-prone skin. The big tub works for face and body, so it doubles as your winter leg and elbow cream too. Per gram, it’s one of the best-value moisturisers you can buy.

The verdict: If your skin is simply dry rather than sensitive, CeraVe will do the heavy lifting. The Clinique is a sensory upgrade, and worth it if you’ll use it twice daily.
Lips: overnight repair for chapped lips
Splurge — Laneige Lip Sleeping Mask (20g), RRP around £22
The overnight lip treatment that went viral, and still lives up to it. A thick, balmy layer of shea butter, coconut oil and murumuru butter, with a berry-fruit complex and vitamin C, goes on before bed and works while you sleep. It comes in a range of flavours (look out for the cosy Hot Cocoa edition this season) and doubles as a glossy daytime balm.

Save — Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Lip Care £3
A simple, occlusive balm applied generously at night gives you most of the same overnight benefit for a few pounds.

The verdict: The Laneige is a genuine treat with a lovely texture and packaging that makes it a great stocking filler. For pure function, a basic balm applied thickly at bedtime gets you most of the way there.
Hands: the winter workhorse
Splurge — L’Occitane Shea Butter Hand Cream (150ml) around £29
The one you’ll find in handbags everywhere from October to March. Shea Hand Balm is an undeniable pillar of the hand care ritual. With its ultra-concentrated formula of shea butter, it nourishes and repairs even very dry skin. Shea butter is rich in Omega-6 and karitene, containing exceptional molecules that help nourish and protect the skin.

Save — Neutrogena Norwegian Formula Concentrated Hand Cream (50ml), around £3
A no-frills classic. This glycerin-rich, concentrated cream is designed for dry, chapped hands, and a tiny dab goes a long way, with the brand claiming up to 200 applications per tube. Choose the unscented version if you have sensitive skin or you’re washing your hands frequently.

The verdict: On pure repair, the Neutrogena is extremely hard to beat. Buy L’Occitane for the ritual, the scent, or as a gift.
Body: comfort beyond the bathroom
Splurge — Sol de Janeiro Brazilian Bum Bum Cream, from around £35.52 (240ml)
Arguably the most recognisable scent in body care right now: salted caramel and pistachio. The fast-absorbing cream includes caffeine-rich guarana and a blend of Brazilian oils and butters, and it leaves a subtle sheen. It’s as much a mood-lifter on a grey November morning as it is a moisturiser. The larger 240ml tub offers better value per ml.

Save —Palmer’s Cocoa Butter Formula Body Lotion 450 g £9.29
A rich, budget body lotion with a warm, gourmand scent of its own delivers the cosy feel at a fraction of the cost.

The verdict: You’re paying for the fragrance with Sol de Janeiro, and plenty of people think that’s money well spent. If moisture is all you need, the save pick (or the CeraVe tub above) has you covered.
Hair: repair after hats, heat and heating
Splurge — Olaplex No.3 Hair Perfector (100ml), £25.60
Winter is hard on hair: hats, scarves, more heat styling and drier air all add up to breakage and frizz. Olaplex’s bond-building pre-shampoo treatment is the original of its kind. Comb it through damp hair, leave for around ten minutes once a week, then wash as normal. It’s suitable for all hair types, including coloured and chemically treated hair.

Save — L’Oreal Paris EverPure Sulfate Free Bond Repair Pre-Shampoo Treatment (150ml), around £16.21
L’Oréal’s high-street answer works the same way, as a rinse-out treatment applied before shampooing, and needs around five minutes. You also get more the volume of the Olaplex for considerably less money, which makes it a much cheaper option per wash.

The verdict: Two very similar routines. If your hair is heavily bleached or processed, the Olaplex has the longer track record. For general winter TLC, the Ever Pure is excellent value.
Wind-down: better sleep, better skin
Splurge — This Works Deep Sleep Pillow Spray (75ml), around £18.75
Dark evenings call for a proper bedtime ritual. This award-winning pillow mist blends lavender, chamomile and vetiver, and a quick spritz over your pillow has become a nightly habit for a lot of people. It’s vegan, and the brand says it’s suitable during pregnancy.

Save — Westlab Sleep Bathing Salts (1kg), £11.76
Turn a weeknight bath into a wind-down instead. Westlab blends Epsom and Dead Sea salts with lavender, jasmine and valerian, and a 1kg bag goes a long way at two to three handfuls per bath. Note that the brand advises against use during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or on broken skin.

The verdict: Different formats, same goal: a slower evening. Use both if you can, salts for a weekend soak and the spray every night.
Where to spend and where to save
If you only splurge on one thing this season, make it the product you’ll reach for most often and enjoy using, whether that’s the hand cream on your desk or the body cream that makes getting out of a warm bed a little easier. For the hardworking basics, such as barrier repair, chapped hands and lips, the budget picks here are genuinely good enough to keep you comfortable until spring.
